Brits dominate LD Duathlon Worlds

European Duathlon champion Catriona Morrison led a British gold-silver sweep in the elite womens field at todays Richmond ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships.  The Scot hit the line with a time of 3 hours, 34 minutes and 56 seconds, a comfortable five minutes ahead of teammate Michelle Lee who took the silver.  Defending champion Yvonne Van Vlerken of the Netherlands came across for the bronze. 

Pre-race favourite Morrison did not disappoint and led from virtually start to finish.  She held a 20-second lead after the first run leg but during the bike she laid down a punishing pace and built a lead of almost four minutes.  With such a big lead in hand, Morrison could have let up and coasted to the finish line but instead she hammered out the fastest final run leg of the day amongst the elite women.

“I knew I had a large gap in the last lap of the bike and so I was able to relax,” said Morrison.  “I was pleasantly surprised that the course was so technical. I really enjoyed it. And Richmond is very, very pretty, especially this time of year.

Morrison adds the Long Distance Duathlon world title to a stellar career that already includes the 2006 short course Duathlon world championship, this years European Duathlon title and a bronze at this years Long Distance Triathlon world championships in Lorient, France.

This was the first time the Long Distance Duathlon World Championships have ever been staged in the United States and the first world championship of any kind hosted by Richmond.

La campeona europea de Duatln Catriona Morrison lider el doblete britnico en la categora lite femenina consiguiendo el oro y la plata en los Campeonatos del Mundo de Duatln ITU de Larga Distancia de Richmond. La escocesa lleg a meta con un tiempo de 3 horas, 34 minutos y 56 segundos, con una cmoda ventaja de cinco minutos sobre su compaera de equipo Michelle Lee quien se llev la plata. La defensora del campeonato Yvonne Van Vlerken de Holanda se llev el bronce. 

La favorita antes de la carrera no defraud y lider la carrera de principio a fin. Ella consigui 20 segundos de ventaja tras el primer segmento de la carrera a pie pero durante el segmento de la bicicleta ella dio un golpe de efecto y abri una ventaja de casi cuatro minutos. Con una ventaja tan grande en sus manos,  Morrison no disminuy el ritmo para cruzar la lnea de meta rematando la carrera con el tiempo ms rpido del da en el ltimo segmento de la carrera a pie en la categora femenina.

Yo saba que tena una gran ventaja en la ltima vuelta de la bicicleta por lo que poda relajarme, dijo Morrison. Estaba gratamente sorprendida de que el circuito fuese tan tcnico. Realmente disfrut. Y Richmond es muy, muy bonita, especialmente en esta poca del ao.

Morrison aade el ttulo mundial de Duatln de Larga Distancia a su carrera estelar que tambin incluye el campeonato del mundo de Duatln 2006 de distancia corta, el ttulo europeo de Duatln de este ao y el bronce en los campeonatos del mundo de Triatln de Larga Distancia de este ao en Lorient, Francia.
