Athlete expectations ahead of the World Cup in Weihai

2019 Weihai ITU World Cup will be staged on Saturday, 21 September. Athletes will race across a challenging standard-distance course that begins with two laps in the waters of Halfmoon Bay, followed by a six-lap ride that includes an energy-sapping 2km climb, rounding off with four loops of a fast and flat 2.5km run along the coast.

Jonas Schomburg (GER)
“I am really happy to be here and racing tomorrow for my second time here. I know the course from last year and really enjoy it and that is why I have returned. It has been a long season but a good season and I am really happy with my progress but unfortunately my body is a bit tired now so I hope to have something left tomorrow to finish the race well.”

Natalie Van Coevorden (AUS)
“It’s my first time here in Weihai and my first time in China since 2011. The course is definitely going to be tough and the hill is going to play a major impact, especially the first few laps in the way the race plays out. I think it’s the person who is the smartest the whole day, smart with their nutrition, smart with their race tactics and smart with how they position themselves all day who will be in the best position in the end.”

Mengying Zhong (CHN)
“This is my second time here in Weihai. Mu first time in 2017. I am quite familiar with the course and I hope that I will deliver a good result tomorrow.”

Miriam Casillas Garcia (ESP)
“Last year I made the podium. This race is really tough, especially the bike course with the climb. I always like the climbs on the bike. I think this is going to be a tough race and these kind of races make you play smart and nothing is decided until the finish line. So I will do that tomorrow and I am happy to be here to race again.”

Matthew Sharpe (CAN)
“I’ve never been to Weihai before and I didn’t know what to expect but having been here for a few days I am very impressed with the setting. You have the ocean, the mountains as well and it’s a very inspiring location to have a competition. With those factors at play and the challenge of the hill and the surf with the water, I am very excited to get out there tomorrow and give it my best in a beautiful location.”

For the first time both races will be streamed in full on TriathlonLIVE.tv so have you pass ready to follow the athletes and races live in Weihai.
